Fairfax House Gate Restoration

During my travels as a Journeyman Blacksmith I found myself on the other side of the world in Sydney Australia where I was fortunate enough to land work at the famous Eveleigh forge works. One of my many jobs was restoring this wonderful set of wrought iron decorative gates. There weren’t in bad repair considering there age however most of the leaf work was beyond repair and a few rosettes and scrolls were missing. I forged replacement scrolls from reclaimed wrought iron and formed new leaves using what was left of the originals as patterns and repeated the process for the rosettes. I used pure iron as it was ductile and easy to form and fitted them to the existing gates using the same methods originally used. I cleaned up and repaired any corroded parts and then fitted everything back into place on the gates using rivets or screws. unfortunately I had to leave before they were fitted but as you can see they looked superb with a fresh coat of paint in the sunshine.
