Traditional Farm Gate Restoration

I was recently approached to repair a pair of gates that the owner had bought in a barn sale many years ago that he now wanted to use to finish off his new listed house. luckily one of the gates was in good condition and didn’t require any work, but the other gate was in bad disrepair and in need of some serious TLC. The owner also wanted a new latch fitting that was in keeping with the existing gates style. First job was to stabilise the gate frame and re attach the bottom bar which had rusted out and bent up. I forged and welded in a piece to house the bottom bar and riveted the bottom bar together. Once this was done I replaced any missing rivets and spacers within the gates and straightened it all out. When all the repair work was done it was time to make a nice big sliding latch that could be lock-able with a padlock and fit back on the existing gate posts.
