Winchester City Park Gate Restoration

whilst I was a journeyman I was asked to repair a gate and gate post along with a stretch of railings that had been hit by a lorry. The gate post was cast iron and the gate and railings were wrought iron. It was a real challenge repairing the cast iron gate post as it was in many pieces and cast iron is tricky to repair at the best of times. I used special cast iron welding rods and a custom mild steel insert to repair the gate post and give it much needed strength and rigidity. I even managed to retain the original lettering on the post. In order to properly repair and straighten the gate I had to heat up the existing rivets and take off the hinge style that was badly bent. I managed to straighten it all out and rivet the gate back together without much problem. The railings needed replacing as were too badly bent so I made some more to match the damaged ones.  All in all the gate, post and railings lived to fight another day.
