Forged Gates
These can be contemporary or traditional in design and range from small bespoke garden gates used to keep the family dog in all the way up to large beautiful entrance gates or gates that are almost sculptural. With all our gates the standard of craftsmanship and attention to detail will remain the same.
How we make our Gates
Traditionally forged gates
These gates are manufactured using traditional techniques and methods such as hot punching/drifting holes, fire welding, fullering, and chiselling to name a few.
The framework of the gate is assembled using mortise and tenon joints and riveting. This gives the gate its initial strength and is then stiffened by adding elements such as scrolls, rings or a shorter bottom row of uprights known as dog bars (because they stop the dog escaping).
These add extra rigidity and triangulation to the piece as well as decoration. There are many different options for scroll ends and leaf work or contemporary decoration on these gates depending on the clients brief or design.
Forged and fabricated Gates
These gates utilise the skills of the blacksmith but also the modern fabrication methods of electric welding. In these gates, the welding process is used to fabricate and assemble the framework.
The forged elements are then utilised the same as on the traditional gates and fixed in position using electric welding. These are used purely as decoration because unlike traditionally made gates it is the welding that holds the frames tight together. Again the different options for scroll ends and decoration are available depending on the clients brief or design.
