Traditional forge work
Forge work is the process of heating iron or steel using a coke or coal-fired forge. The steel is then pulled from the fire when hot enough and hammered on an anvil until the desired shape is achieved.

The heating and shaping process is repeated until the blacksmith is happy with his work. In its plastic heated state iron or steel can be manipulated into pretty much any shape desired.
It can be drawn down (made thinner) or upset (made thicker) split with a chisel or bent easily or have a hole punched through it. Anything you can do with clay can be done with hot iron or steel. All this is done using a variety of hammers, tongs, chisels, punches, swages and fullers. The “Traditional” style of ironwork is the most common style associated with the craft.
It incorporates many different types of scrollwork and leaf work and other organic forms to create beautiful designs and patterns. All held together using a range of techniques including forge welding, collars, wraps, rivets, threaded screws, wedges, and mortise and tenon joints to name a few.
